Understanding CAS

Childhood Apraxia of Speech is a rare, brain-based disorder that affects how a child plans and coordinates the muscle movements needed for speech.

Children with CAS know what they want to say, but the message from the brain to the mouth doesn’t always come through correctly.

This can cause:

  • Inconsistent sound errors
  • Difficulty blending sounds into words
  • Unusual rhythm or “melody” in speech

CAS is not caused by muscle weakness. It requires specialized, frequent therapy that focuses on motor learning, practice, and support.

Identifying Issues

Children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech often:

  • Struggle to imitate sounds and words
  • Make errors inconsistently
  • Have more trouble with longer words and phrases
  • Speak with disrupted rhythm or stress

These are not just “articulation errors.” They point to a deeper challenge with motor planning. Early assessment and therapy are key to reducing frustration and supporting communication.
